AI Mode Site Rank Tracking Software: How to Pick One That Actually Tracks AI Mode

AI Mode Site Rank Tracking Software

Introduction:

AI Mode site rank tracking software checks whether Google’s AI Mode mentions your brand or links to your pages when it answers a set of questions you choose. It runs those prompts on a schedule and logs the results, so you see AI Mode visibility as a trend instead of a single position.

AI Mode writes a conversational answer and cites a few sources, and those AI Mode citations can change between runs. So every tool gives an estimate, and prices move fast. Everything below was checked against vendor pages, Google’s own documentation, and independent reviews on September 29, 2026.I haven’t run hands-on tests of these tools. This guide is based on vendor pages, Google’s documentation, and independent reviews.

Before you pay anyone, look at what Google Search Console already shows for free. Then decide whether you need prompt tracking and share of voice against competitors.

At a Glance: AI Mode rank tracking helps businesses measure how visible their brand and website are in Google AI Mode search results. Unlike traditional SEO rankings, Google AI Mode does not provide a fixed position. Instead, AI visibility is measured through brand mentions, citations, cited URLs, competitor visibility, and share of voice.

Google Search Console’s Generative AI performance report provides a free way to monitor AI-related impressions, making it a useful starting point for businesses exploring AI search. Dedicated AI Mode rank tracking tools can provide deeper prompt-level tracking, competitor comparisons, scheduled monitoring, and citation analysis.

Because AI Mode answers can change based on queries, personalization, follow-up questions, and model updates, reliable tracking requires a consistent prompt set and regular monitoring. When choosing an AI Mode tracking tool, check its prompt limits, citation data, reporting features, tracking frequency, and AI Mode coverage.

For SEO, AEO, and GEO, the goal is not simply to rank, but to increase visibility, earn citations, and become a trusted source in AI-generated answers.

What AI Mode Rank Tracking Actually Measures

Most tools report three things:

  • Mentions: the answer names your brand.
  • Citations: the answer links to one of your URLs as a source.
  • Visibility or share of voice: the share of your tracked prompts where you show up, often compared with competitors.

Some tools add a position number. Semrush’s Prompt Tracking gives daily updates on your domain’s position for target prompts in Google AI Mode, ChatGPT Search, and Gemini. That’s Semrush’s own metric. Google’s announcement of its AI reports in Search Console lists impressions, pages, and dates, with no AI Mode position.

Why AI Mode Has No Fixed Position

A classic results page is a ranked list, so “position 4” means something. AI Mode builds an answer instead. Google says it uses query fan-out, which splits your question into subtopics and searches for each one at the same time. Different subtopics pull different pages, so the sources shift with the question and its follow-ups.

Personalization adds another layer. Google says AI Mode’s Personal Intelligence can use activity saved in your Search history to tailor suggestions. A tracker can’t see your customers’ histories, so it samples the answer and estimates where you stand. Read the trend over weeks. One check tells you very little.

AI Mode, AI Overviews and the Gemini App Are Three Different Surfaces

AI Overviews sit on the standard results page. AI Mode is the conversational experience. The Gemini app is a separate product. Google’s documentation says AI Mode and AI Overviews may use different models and techniques, so the responses and links they show will vary.

Models change too. At I/O in May 2026, Google said Gemini 3.5 Flash became the default model in AI Mode globally and that AI Mode had passed one billion monthly users. A model update can shift which sources appear, so your tracker line can move when nothing changed on your site.

A tool that says “Gemini tracking” or “AI Overviews tracking” isn’t necessarily tracking AI Mode. Otterly’s help pages, for example, treat Google AI Mode and Gemini as separate paid add-ons.

What Search Console Shows for Free

On June 3, 2026, Google announced Search Generative AI performance reports in Search Console. They give dedicated views of your impressions in generative AI features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode, plus generative AI features in Discover. Google lists impressions, pages, and dates, with hourly to monthly views. That data was already counted in your overall performance report. The new view separates it.

The scope is narrow. It’s only impressions. Independent write-ups note there are no clicks and no queries, and the report can’t show competitors or the prompts behind an appearance.

Rollout was staged. Google says the reports have reached all sites worldwide, but its help pages still say not every property has access, and sites without enough AI impressions may not see a report. If the tab is missing from your property, that’s the likely reason.

Google also added a control that lets site owners opt out of these AI features. Sites that opt out don’t get traffic or impressions from them, so look at your AI impressions before you touch that toggle.

How Trackers Collect Data, and Why Results Vary

AI Mode Site Rank Tracking

A tracker submits your prompts to AI Mode on a schedule, then records the answer and the sources it shows. Vendors describe their collection methods in their own words, so ask for proof instead of taking the pitch at face value. Three things make AI Mode data noisier than old-school rank data:

  1. Personalization. A tool that runs logged-in sessions may capture one person’s answer instead of what most searchers see.
  2. Volatility. Model updates and fresh sources can change answers overnight. A fixed prompt set run repeatedly shows the trend. A single run doesn’t.
  3. Follow-ups. AI Mode is conversational. Ask each vendor whether it only runs your first prompt or also runs follow-up questions.

Refresh rate matters too. Semrush updates prompt positions daily. Keyword.com lets you schedule checks from hourly to weekly. One review reports Ahrefs Brand Radar’s chatbot indexes refresh monthly, and I couldn’t confirm how often its AI Mode data refreshes. For an active campaign, daily checks make sense. Weekly is a fair baseline. Monthly only will miss shifts.

What Tracking Data Can’t Tell You

  • What real people type. These tools run the prompts you give them.
  • Traffic value. A citation shows visibility. Neither trackers nor Search Console’s AI impressions confirm clicks or revenue.
  • Small moves. A shift between two checks can be noise.

AI Mode Tracking Tools Compared

Prices below were checked on September 29, 2026. Where vendor pages and reviews disagree, the table says so. Confirm the current price on the vendor’s own page before you buy.

Tool How it covers AI Mode Reported price Limits to know
Semrush Prompt Tracking in the AI Visibility Toolkit, daily updates $99/mo per domain standalone. Semrush One from $199/mo (per reviews of Semrush’s pricing page) 25 prompts standalone. 50, 100, or 200 prompts on Semrush One Starter, Pro+, or Advanced. Extra 50 prompts: $60/mo
Ahrefs Brand Radar AI Visibility Index includes an AI Mode index. Custom Prompts track your own questions Custom Prompts add-on: $50, $100 or $250/mo. Index price reports conflict (see below) Paid Ahrefs plans include 150, 300, or 600 checks a month (5, 10, or 20 prompts on one platform, daily)
SE Ranking AI Results Tracker includes AI Mode Core 129/mo(103.20 billed annually). AI Search add-on from $71.20 to $89/mo depending on billing The add-on extends limits and includes SE Visible access
Nightwatch AI Mode listed among AI platforms on every plan €79, €159 or €399/mo 50, 150 or 500 AI prompts. 14-day free trial
AccuRanker (AccuLLM) AI Mode is one of four tracked surfaces LLM Lite €179/mo billed yearly (€199 monthly). LLM Pro €449 (€499) 100 prompts and 1 brand on Lite. 300 prompts and 5 brands on Pro. Pricing page showed a launch offer, so confirm
Keyword.com Credit-based AI Mode tracker From about $24.50/mo (one third-party roundup) An AI Mode check costs 0.25 credit. Unused credits expire monthly. 14-day free trial, no card
Rankscale AI Mode among supported engines Pro $99/mo, Growth $385/mo. Essentials reported at about €20/mo An AI Mode run costs about 0.25 credit. Sources disagree on Essentials credits
Otterly AI Mode is a paid add-on Lite reported at $29/mo for 15 prompts The AI Mode add-on costs extra

A few notes on those rows:

Semrush. The AI Visibility Toolkit is sold separately from the SEO plans, and its help pages say the prompt limit depends on your subscription. That’s why the effective price for a non-customer who wants 50 prompts sits well above $99.

Ahrefs. Its Custom Prompts page says Custom Prompts come built into every paid plan, with add-on packs above that. Reports on the AI Visibility Index price disagree. Older reviews say $199 per platform and $699 for all. A September 2026 review describes a $199 index across all platforms with a check meter. Ahrefs’ own blog also lists ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot as the Custom Prompts platforms, so confirm that AI Mode is included before you rely on it.

SE Ranking. Its help center lists AI Mode among the tracked platforms and says AI features come with plan limits that the add-on extends. Two prices circulate for the add-on because one reflects annual billing.

Nightwatch. The pricing page shows the euro plans above. Older reviews describe a $32 base plan plus a $99 AI add-on. That structure appears to have been replaced, so ignore those numbers.

AccuRanker. The AccuLLM pricing page shows the tiers above along with a launch promotion that mentioned extra free prompts. Ask what the standard allowance is today.

Keyword.com. Its pricing page sells AI Visibility as a standalone product or an add-on, with unlimited domains. Credit cost varies by engine, and AI Mode is 0.25 credit per check.

Rankscale. The pricing page lists Pro and Growth. The “17+ engines” figure is the company’s own claim. One review counts “over 10 platforms.”

Otterly. AI Mode is optional and costs extra, so the $29 headline isn’t the price of AI Mode tracking.

Others turn up repeatedly in roundups, including Peec AI, Rankshift, and Pro Rank Tracker, which lists an AI Mode tracker that shows Links and Mentions. Check each one’s AI Mode coverage before you compare prices. ZipTie was described as covering AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity in a March 2026 review, so confirm whether that has changed.

Free and Low-Cost Ways to Track AI Mode

Free

  • Search Console: your own AI Mode impressions by page, country, and date. Start here.
  • Keyword.com: a 14-day free trial with no card.
  • Ahrefs: its Custom Prompts page offers a free preview of your AI visibility. Check what it covers before you rely on it.

Cheap

Rankscale’s Essentials plan is the lowest headline price I found. One directory lists it with 120 credits and up to 480 AI responses a month. At about 0.25 credits per AI Mode run, that’s roughly 16 prompts checked daily on one engine for a month, or a longer list checked weekly. Keyword.com’s credit system works the same way: its calculator multiplies prompts by four weekly updates by 0.25 credit. SE Ranking’s AI add-on, the Otterly add-on, and the suite plans above start higher.

Where free stops

Free tiers give snapshots. They can tell you whether you appear at all. They can’t show a trend across a real prompt set, competitor benchmarks or why your visibility moved. Peec AI, Hall, and Omnia are among the vendors that advertise free tiers or checkers. I couldn’t confirm their current limits, so read those pages yourself.

How to Set Up Your First Prompt Set in 10 Minutes

How to Set Up Your First Prompt Set in 10 Minutes

This is my suggested workflow. No vendor requires it.

  1. Write 10 to 20 prompts in full sentences. Mix buyer questions (“what’s the best X for Y”), comparisons, how-to problems, and a few with your brand name.
  2. Freeze the list. Don’t edit prompts week to week, or you can’t compare results.
  3. Run a baseline for a week. Record for each prompt: mentioned or not, cited or not, and which URL.
  4. Change one thing at a time. Update one page or publish one new page, then wait.
  5. Compare after four weeks. Look at the trend across the four weeks.

If you’re not cited, Google says the best practices for SEO still apply to AI features. Make sure the page is indexed and can appear with a snippet, and answer the subtopics a longer question breaks into. Then check the trend again.

How to Check That a Tool Really Tracks AI Mode

Run these during a trial or a free tier.

  1. Confirm AI Mode is reported separately from AI Overviews and the Gemini app.
  2. Look for URL-level citations. The dashboard should list specific cited pages. A domain-only count isn’t enough.
  3. Test logged-out, per-country runs. Run one prompt for two countries. Identical citations across countries, or signs of a logged-in session, suggest personalization is contaminating the data.
  4. Ask for raw answer text with timestamps. One buyer guide suggests also asking for a timestamped screenshot of the answer the tool captured.
  5. Check multi-turn handling. Ask whether follow-up questions are run.
  6. Run a small benchmark. Run the same 20 prompts on two or three tools and compare inclusion rates. A big gap suggests one tool is missing AI Mode answers.

Choosing by Budget and Team Size

This is an analysis based on the details above. I haven’t tested every tool.

  • No budget: Search Console’s Generative AI report for your own visibility, plus one free trial for a snapshot of competitors.
  • Small budget: a credit-based tool with a fixed core prompt list, checked weekly. Watch how quickly credits drain.
  • You already pay for a suite: look at what it includes first. Ahrefs paid plans include a small Custom Prompts quota, Semrush One includes prompt limits, and SE Ranking and Nightwatch cover AI Mode in their plans.
  • Agencies: compare seats, brands, and prompt caps. Nightwatch and AccuRanker both advertise unlimited seats on their AI plans, so per-client cost depends mostly on prompts.
  • Everyone: track fewer prompts, consistently. Cost scales with coverage, and Ahrefs meters custom tracking in checks, where one check is one prompt on one platform.

Recent Changes That Affect Tracking

  • June 3, 2026: Google launched the Search Generative AI performance reports in Search Console. It later said they’d reached all sites worldwide.
  • May 2026: At I/O, Google said AI Mode passed one billion monthly users and made Gemini 3.5 Flash its default model globally. Model changes can move tracker data without any change on your site.
  • June 5, 2026: A Chrome Canary flag briefly redirected address bar searches to AI Mode. Google’s VP of Engineering for Search, Rajan Patel, said it was an error and that Google isn’t planning to make AI Mode the default for Chrome searches. Some blogs still describe AI Mode as the default search experience, so check what a source actually cites.
  • September 4, 2026: Google’s Ads Liaison confirmed a small experiment in which exact and phrase match keywords can serve text ads in AI Mode, limited to explicit and direct user intent.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is AI Mode rank tracking?

It’s a way to monitor whether your brand or pages appear inside Google’s AI Mode answers for prompts you choose. Trackers report mentions, cited URLs and share of voice instead of a classic ranking position.

Can I track AI Mode in Search Console?

Partly. Search Console’s Generative AI report shows how often your URLs appeared in AI features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode. It shows impressions only. It doesn’t show clicks, competitors or prompts.

How is AI Mode different from AI Overviews?

AI Overviews appear on the standard results page. AI Mode is a conversational experience. Google says they may use different models and techniques, so their answers and links can differ.

Do traditional rank trackers support AI Mode?

Some do, usually on a specific plan or as an add-on. Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking, Nightwatch, AccuRanker, and Keyword.com list AI Mode tracking. Otterly sells it as an add-on. Check that your tier includes it.

How many prompts should I track?

Start with the buyer questions your customers ask and keep the list constant. Entry limits vary a lot: 25 on Semrush’s standalone toolkit, 50 on Nightwatch Starter, 100 on AccuRanker LLM Lite and 15 on Otterly Lite, per the sources above.

How often should I check?

Daily suits active campaigns and competitive topics. Weekly is a workable baseline. Monthly only can miss changes in who appears.

Do AI Mode trackers show traffic?

No. They measure visibility inside answers. Search Console’s AI report gives impressions but not clicks.

Should I opt out of AI features?

Google added a Search Console control that lets sites exclude their content from AI features. Opting out means no traffic or impressions from them. Whether that pays off depends on how much your site gets from AI surfaces today. Look at your AI impressions first.

The Practical Takeaway

Read AI Mode tracking as sampled visibility across a stable prompt set. Start with Search Console’s free report. Add a free trial or a low-cost tracker if you need competitor and prompt-level data, and consider a suite add-on only if it fits a tool you already pay for. Before you commit, confirm that a tool tracks AI Mode itself, shows URL-level citations, runs logged out, and exports raw answers. Then check the price on the vendor’s page, because it changes often.
